The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at fans during a Sunday’s contest at MetLife Stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was regrettable. That was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just put up the incorrect finger,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, a figure who is known for his media savvy, possesses an approximate wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty easily payable for the wealthy owner.
