Are You Able to Solve It? The Overlooked Netherlands Invention That Forged our Contemporary World
There are numerous contenders to claim the title of “world’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The printing press. The combustion motor.
As per a recent publication, though, that honor belongs to the mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Before mechanised cutting, constructing a simple merchant vessel required approximately 10 sawyers working for 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-driven sawmills, the same amount of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than seven days.”
Thanks to this speedy mechanical cutter, that converted logs into planks using virtually no human effort, the Dutch were able to construct ships faster compared to anyone else, an advantage that unleashed a century of Netherlands maritime, economic and artistic dominance in the continent and the globe.
The Original Genuine Manufacturing Machine
The inventor's sawmill, argues Dávila, was “humanity’s initial authentic factory machine.” A windmill rotated a gear. One component converted the circular movement into vertical action to power the saw. A separate mechanism transformed that same rotary motion into a sideway’s movement feeding the log to the cutter. A geared mechanism shifted the log forward a measured step each stroke.
“Each element seemed modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s genius lay in how to combine these parts in order that they acted in a perfectly controlled order, cutting with each descending motion while moving on every return stroke. It was a remarkably intelligent application of basic components.”
